His treatment towards his daughters is both loving and flawed, making Ortun relatable and tangible. When Viscardi arrives, Morella begs him to kill her and spare the remaining Thaumas girls. Each death was more tragic than the last--the plague, a plummeting fall, a drowning, a slippery plunge--and there are whispers throughout the surrounding villages that the family is cursed by the gods. Hope is also threaded throughout the novel and hits the reader all in the right spots. I am calling this a YA Horror, because even though the story isn't exactly a Horror story, I am calling out Erin A. Craig as a Horror writer! And slowly Annaleigh starts to believe in too. And then the whole story flipped and all I knew or thought I knew crumbled under my eyes.
