But Marcellus, the giant Pacific octopus wrapped his tentacles around me and soon won me over. He immediately takes interest in an elephant who seems untrainable but he finds a way to reach her while protecting her from an unruly handler. A conflicted experience, I think. For fans of A Man Called Ove, a charming, witty and compulsively readable exploration of friendship, reckoning, and hope, tracing a widow's unlikely connection with a giant Pacific octopus. She has friends, she has a job, she makes sure she has purpose. Remarkably Bright Creatures is the rarest of feats: a book that manages to be wry and wise, charming and surprising, and features one of the most intriguing and satisfying characters I've encountered in fiction in a very long time—Marcellus the Octopus. Most of it probably won't be, but I've plucked some gems from this sort of exercise! Not what I expected and not more normal read, the book managed to keep me turning the pages to find out if second chances really exist. The men are similarly flawed and human. I expected Marcellus the octopus to the be star of this novel, but the real star in this plot is Tova and the things she learns about herself from working with Marcellus. She also has the small grocery store owner, Ethan Mack, who watches out for her, although she doesn't want to get too close to him. One day Cameron walks into their lives. Does this sounds weird to you? This turned out to be a fitting link as the lead character in Remarkably Bright Creatures, Tova is a charming older lady in her 70s. Missing one hundred percent of the shots you don't take, and all. In the last few pages of the novel, Tova and Cameron realize how they are truly connected. Did you take the leap or not?

The novel winds its way through, shifting narration between our delightful Marcellus, Tova, and a young man named Cameron who starts cleaning the aquarium, and meets Marcellus, after Tova suffers a bit of an injury on the job. Remarkably Bright Creatures is different to what I would normally read, but I'm so glad I did. And like the creation of a good broth, it can be a slow, experimental process to get the flavor right. She's a character to both admire and empathize with. Parallel to Tova's life, we follow Cameron's story.
