These monoliths will show you what the soil under foot looks like in all three of North Carolina's geographic regions – mountains, piedmont, and coastal plain. With more help, we can conserve the soil and water for generations to come. Although only two local schools submitted entries for the competition, these students dominated both Area and State contests. Also, many people don't understand the importance of soil and water, so we need to educate them. The county winner wins a bike and helmet, in addition to the $25.

Soil And Water Nourish People
Winners of honors for 6th Grade Written Essay include: First Place, Charles Harper; Second Place, Preethi Chada; and Third Place, Ava Carter. This is a fun filled event allowing all fifth graders in Vance County to learn more about the environment and the importance of preserving natural resources. The Jackson Soil and Water Conservation District held its annual poster contest for students in 3rd through 6th grade in Jackson County. By using any one of these methods, they can help prevent nutrients from leaving the soil.
Good Soil And Water
Mark Chhim, a 6th grade student from Ledford Middle School, and Zachary Spease, a 6th grade student from Oak Grove Middle School whose poster and essay were both selected as the Davidson County 1st place winners. Some ways to prevent pollution are to recycle and reuse, stop littering and reduce burning of waste. 3rd grade poster winners were 1st- Koen Dittrich, 2nd- Shaedon Ureña, 3rd- Declan Stanberry, all from Chrissy Hughes Summit Charter School class. Zachary's essay and Mark's poster were entered in the Area VIII Contest, which consists of 12 Counties. Top finishers in the 7th Grade Public Speaking are: First Place, Wali Omer; Second Place, Ezra Zapler; Third Place, Clara Evans. Each year, Haywood County Soil and Water Conservation District sponsors various contests that promote student understanding of natural resources and conservation. The teacher of the winning student also received $50 in recognition of their contribution to the students' success. In suburban and urban areas, much of the water that hits the landscape washes away down the storm drains, often carrying pollutants and soil with it. Conservation plowing is when farmers try to disturb the soil as little as possible.

The Richmond County Soil and Water Conservation District was established by petition and vote of the people under provisions of the Soil Conservation Districts Law of 1937, Chapter 139 of the General Statutes, providing for the creation of Soil Conservation Districts. Burke Soil and Water Conservation District is accepting applications from both agricultural and urban land users in Burke County for the North Carolina Agricultural Cost Share Program and the Community Conservation Assistance Program. Third, fourth, fifth, and sixth graders submit posters that captured the year's theme: "We All Live in a Watershed. Importance Of Soil And Water
The District's responsibilities are to prevent soiled erosion, protect water resources and other related natural resources from abuse and deterioration. Richmond SWCD offers free technical assistance to landowners in the county with land management, drainage, wetlands, soils information, best management practices and other land resource problems. It takes 500 years to form an inch of topsoil, so it is not quickly replaced. The competition begins at the District level. Pollution is when you introduce a harmful substance to the environment. The state has eight areas comprised of all 100 of the state's counties. The meetings are open to the public and a notice of the meetings is posted on the outer doors and the bulletin board of the Richmond County Agricultural Center Building. The county winner may go on to compete at area and state levels. These programs are intended to assist land users with technical and financial assistance to install Best Management Practices (BMPs) which are designed to address water quality and soil erosion problems.
NRCS provides soil conservation specialists to help landowners and land-users. Claire Mixon of Parrott won both First Place in Area 6 and First Place in the State for 6th Grade Poster, and Valli Blackwelder of Parrott took First Place in Area 6 and First Place in State for Sixth Grade PowerPoint.
