How To Hook Up A Dwell Meter

The wires going to tach at the console are Grn/Red and Grn. BTW- My tachometer called for the negative lead from the coil, would a dwell meter be the same as a tachometer??? It might sound like something from "Back to the Future" (in fact, there was time when this process was considered almost magical), but today it's basic automotive knowledge. Posted: Mon Oct 01, 2012 9:37 pm Post subject: | Can you put your old condensor back on? Does anyone know how to use a tach dwell meter to adjust the rpms on a car? Assuming you are still running point, (sounds like it from that reading), too little dwell = too large a point gap, to much dwell = to small a point gap. How To Connect A Tach Dwell Meter

I think my issue may be that, (above post) my condenser is not properly grounding to the dist. When I used to set up my 312 Y-block, I would set the dwell at 26 degrees. I have a RAC maxi-tune, I have had it for years and I forgot how to hook it up. Dwell is the time that the points are closed (and charging the coil)measured in crankshaft degrees. And Yellow to the negative side of the coil (to the dizzy points). Gary, it's not the same brand but it does look like it has the same functions. I know to increase the dwell, I shorten the point vice-versa. Edited by bkreutz - 12 Aug. 2008 at 10:22pm. At any rate, with the new electronics, this stuff is now a thing of the past. I guess the coil is a ground? Joined: 17 Oct. 2006. Posted: Mon Oct 01, 2012 9:00 pm Post subject: | Um, this may be a stupid question but.. How does this work on cars with twin points?? Just personal preference, but electronic ignitions have only left me high and dry.

I'd say red to 12V (battery) to power the meter when in dwell or tach functions. 9, 4sp, headers, 31's, SAS Dana 30, Dana 20, SOA rear w/Aussie Locker, body ROUGH, bought new 12/4/78. Post your photos to The Samba Gallery! 3. ive traced the oe tachometer and it hooks to a blk/white primary wire on the coil, but when i hook my positive to the coil where do i plug the ground?

How To Hook Up A Dwell Meter To Set Points

When the distributor shaft is rotating, the contact-breaker points open as the heel of the moving point is pushed outwards by a lobe of the cam, and close while it is over the flat area between two lobes. 06-16-2016, 06:11 PM||. Andy: Thanks, you answered Q & I immediately did. The blue wire is inside the black cable sleeve which should be carefully slit open and the a small part of the blue wire should be carefully exposed for connection to the positive lead of the dwell meter. It should actually say "TACH" on it and is just connected to the negative side of the coil. 1 is there and easy way to know if the tach and or dwell portion is measuring accurately? Or do you hook up to points somehow? I did manage to get the meter working but for the life of me, none of the readings made sense. Follow the maker's instructions. Theres a black wire which connects to a white wire and goes into the coil, thats the in car tachometer power wire, according to the book which is correct because if i disconnect it i get nothing in the car. 'Cuz we never throw those beautiful old Bosch condensors out, right? HAve someone turn the key and crank it while you read the meter. I get a very low dwell reading (12-15). 8 cylinder set up, 4 cylinder is similar).

Please be aware that this is a community forum. Any light oil (3 in 1 is good) for under the felt. The green goes to the negative side, which the tach also uses, unless it has a pickup that clamps around the number one plug wire. Std exhaust (Bell SS) AFAIK rest is bog standard. Using a feeler gauge to get close, adjust the points to the desired setting according to dwell readings and tighten the points. You sould get a spark every time and it can build up a spark faster than you could ever tap the wire. There is an inverse relationship between dwell angle and point gap.

It can therefore be used to check the gap on worn points with more accuracy than a feeler gauge, and can be used without removing the distributor cap and with the engine running. Timing seems a little bit unsteady in 850-1050 RPMs range but I assume it's normal for a 40 Y. O. unrebuilt distributor to have an oscillation of 3-4 degrees). If to the coil, which wire? Point gap is more important than the dwell on the Cub since the engine is very slow turning (rpms). Location: The Bone Yard. Well, I guess if your doing it for tuning purposes. Grab both sides of the terminals that way you can plug your dwell in and simply unplug it when your done. Many mechanics like to check the dwell measurement with a dwell meter after setting the points. I will adjust was missing at hi rpms... Won't work with the magneto. The meter will have a switch for this. This would be a typical dwell angle for a four-cylinder engine. Set them too close and the engine stops working after a few miles.

The dwell meter is more accurate, as that is what you are aiming for anyway, is how long the points stay shut. Who knows, maybe something will jump out.
