Yet as more of Asher's secrets are revealed, she begins to wonder if he's more like his father than she thought. Now Eve Dallas must investigate the murder without being caught up in the media circus surrounding the case. Learning to translate, and the magic that comes with it, soon puts Swift on a collision course between loyalty to his homeland and his adopted company when Britain starts a war with China. I liked her descriptions, especially of the landscape and of weather. She has written biographies of Mary, Queen of Scots, Elizabeth I and Henry VIII's six wives. I enjoy them, but they're the kind of tales I find intriguing perhaps once a year... given their combination of historical and contemporary fiction, plus a little fantasy or super-natural elements. In the present day, the story revolves around the discovery of the body of Serena's twin sister, Caitlin, who disappeared mysteriously 11 years before. Serena is staying with an aunt in California when she receives the news she has been dreading: Caitlin's body has been found during an archaeological dig close to their grandparents' old home in Oxfordshire, which stands near the ruins of Minster Lovell Hall. The first half of the story follows twenty-seven-year-old Serena Warren, whose twin sister Caitlin disappeared when they were seventeen. We had the most gorgeous breakfast and very reasonably priced. We found this place by wandering the streets. When his son Arthur Prince of Wales died, Catherine of Aragon's father wanted back the dowry that he had paid. While there is a bit of paranormal "woo-woo" in the way that Caitlin's body ended up in that tomb, the 21st century part of this story, the mystery of her disappearance, was also resolved more than satisfactorily. When one of her Welsh tenants complained of the heavy-handedness of Henry's uncle, Jasper Tudor, Earl of Pembroke, she did not refer the matter to the king but sent a sharp reproof to Pembroke herself, which apparently achieved the desired result.
I really can't recommend this highly enough! This was actually a clever mystery that I would otherwise have loved if my brain had shut up and let me enjoy it.
