It began as a way to welcome the Governor of Massachusetts to Oak Bluffs, with residents decorating their homes with Japanese silk lanterns brought to the island by sailors returning from Asia. It's blink and you'll miss it. It is typically held on the third Wednesday in August, when the beautiful gingerbread cottages are decorated with hundreds of colorful Japanese and Chinese lanterns. Starting sometime that morning, but more often into the afternoon, campgrounds start the intricate process of lantern-ing their homes. As the community grew, there was a pressing need for an open yet protected space that could accommodate hundreds of people and protect them from the sun and rain. It was in the July 5, 1867, edition of The Vineyard Gazette that the company placed its first advertisement for the newly named resort of "Oak Bluffs.
