In the final battle at the harbor festival the creatures on land are defeated by setting the water on fire. Where the film really lives up to its cult status is a wonderfully manic siege of the town's Salmon Fair. The nastiness quotient here is high enough to satisfy even a long-time fan of Italian horror flicks (we are talking about a movie in which scads of women are raped by fucking fish, you realize), and the film is loaded with gore, fantastic slimy monsters, and purely gratuitous nudity, but Humanoids from the Deep also works on a second, almost satiric level. Don't give up on your hobbies lads and lassies, there's someone out there for all of us!!! What else is there in life?

Her Canco bosses were, of course, not interested in anything but their profit margins, so they hushed her up and had her keep working. And they go to great lengths to drop our jaws and make us scream and squirm. It's nice to see Shout Factory has once again delivered a stunning presentation for a movie most studios would probably have ignored. There's plenty of blood being spilt here as well as a great amount of nudity. Once again, Shout misses the opportunity to provide fans with a Digital Copy of the film, though. These were thrilling stories that often expanded in the telling but one film that stood out in repeated tales was HUMANOIDS FROM THE DEEP. One of James Horner's early scores, far better than the movie deserves. His role in HUMANOIDS FROM THE DEEP (1980) is basically the same as those seen in any number of sci fi monster films from the 1950's. The Indian had blood covering his shirt after holding a dead dog.

The villain (with the redemptive arc) is played with ludicrously racist & narrow-minded care by Vic Morrow (The Bad News Bears & Twilight Zone: The Movie). It turns out there's a reason for that. It's the Roger Corman way. Humanoids From the Deep (stupidly titled Monster in Europe and Japan) is a 1980 monster movie directed by Barbara Peeters and stars Doug McClure, Ann Turkel, Vic Morrow, playboy covergirl Lynn Schiller (rowr! The coup-de-grace for me? Reportedly the entire reason that Peeters was fired by Corman, was because she refused to add scenes of the titular Humanoids ripping off women's clothing to expose their nude bodies. However, sometimes they had the potential to be even more than that, and none are a better example of this than 1980's Humanoids From The Deep.

I remember seeing this poster when I was growing up, and was intrigued and troubled by it. It was directed by Barbara Peeters, which may surprise some people when you consider the films subject matter of murder and rape. Rather, they tend to resemble 16MM prints instead. There is strong violence and threat. I certainly think it's one of the better ones Corman was involved with, and that's saying something. All of which makes the outlook for the rest of the salmon festival distinctly grim. However, after seeing the finished film and deciding there wasn't enough nudity in it, Corman ordered Peeters to bolster the skin factor on the picture.

Now, keep in mind that, for the most part, the Humanoids are just people walking around in slimy rubber suits (remember Roger Corman. ) Next up we've got a collection of deleted scenes and a making-of retrospective piece featuring interviews with several of the crew involved in the production. Our monster, who spends a shocking amount of time on-screen (during the daytime, no less) is fairly elaborate, decked out in seaweed, green slime and other goo. So if you want a cheesy monster movie full of blood and tits, watch Humanoids of the Deep! One of the great drive in classics of all time made even more startling in that it was directed by a woman. During the fight, the blood changes from shot to shot-- it's covering one side of his shirt, then in the next shot, it's barely any blood at all and not on his shoulder but in the middle. This movie first popped up on my radar a few weeks ago, when it was recommended via the Shudder Hotline (more on that here).

Look it up on the interwebs and watch the video on YouTube. But, in an era where movies like Alien and Halloween were filling theaters with teen fans hungry for more, Humanoids delivers in bloody spades. This movie is also fascinating for the way that it somehow manages to squeeze nearly every hoary bad movie cliche imaginable into a mere 80 minutes, while simultaneously offering a step-by-step guide on how to make both a 70 s eco-horror flick and an 80 s body-count movie. But, alas, they are not.

This, of course, is largely due to the film's surprisingly great effects, from Oscar-winner Chris Walas, who, just a few years later, went on to do films like The Fly I and II and Gremlins (directed by Corman-alum Joe Dante). As it happens, there is exactly one non-moron in all of Noyo, and his name is Johnny Eagles (Anthony Penya, whom we ll see again in Megaforce and The Running Man). Luckily this taboo subject has become less common across media and viewed rightfully as the reprehensible act it is. Everything I knew about it screamed 'disaster' but my curiosity once again did me in. Half Man, Half Brussels Sprout|. One takes place during a fight between Jim and Johnny Eagle against Slattery and his goons. But, given how grimy, unpolished and genuinely nasty this film has looked in the past; this print is eons sharper and cleaner than ever before. A larger than expected explosion sent a helicopter careening to the ground decapitating Morrow and a child he was carrying. One of the teenage victims is a ventriloquist with one of the creepiest puppets I've witnessed, and yet he's also getting laid. Oh, and let's not forget Jimmy Murakami. This ended Dante's tenure with Corman as he was receiving offers with a greater monetary value attached. So cheap, that when I first watched it, I thought to myself, " Hey, I didn't know this was a low budget made-for-TV movie! " Which, as a financier, was probably something he had every right to do, except he did it in a really dickish way by…. The subplots are all boring and slog the movie down, and the acting can be hit or miss, but overall it's a decent monster flick. The late James Horner composed his third ever feature film score here and you would swear that it belongs in a different, bigger film. DNA-5 s effects on the salmon themselves were well understood, but what might the chemical do to an organism that ate those salmon? Interestingly, some shots have the creatures with elongated arms while other shots the arms are a normal length for a man. It's got loads of blood and cool kills. Morrow would be killed in a freak accident while filming TWILIGHT ZONE: THE MOVIE in 1982. Soon scientists step in and test the water where the fish live and discover some mutation causing chemicals which in turn of course create the humanoids! Hoedowns the likes of which you've never the extras!
This version features additional gore (an infamous scene involving some terrific makeup). Horner garnered attention from his earlier ambitious musical works on his Corman movies most especially his work on BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS (1980), a film that introduced the talents of future award winning director, James Cameron. The nudity, rape and gore were added by a second unit after initial filming and the director and Turkel wanted their names taken off. MOVIE TRIVIA SIDE NOTE: Vic Morrow is the father of Hollywood A-lister Jennifer Jason Leigh. Languages and Audio. And yet all pales in comparison to the most alarming moment that shook my drunk self to the core.

Peeters was a New World veteran having done second unit on some films including the Ron Howard star vehicle, EAT MY DUST! Some very disturbing things are happening in the small fishing town of Noyo, California. Just about every aspect of the effects are truly impressive.
