In this book, Kya was very lucky to find some people who actually cared about her. I love this movie but I need to say this. As someone who read the book I was pleasantly surprised when my friend informed me it would be a movie. Kya laid her hand upon the breathing, wet earth, and the marsh became her so Kya learns to love and live by herself. It almost goes all the way until she hits him with a rock. She was a smart and clever girl who knew the marsh and found ways to make money and provide for her basic needs. Salt air and gull-song drifted through the trees from the sea. That the smells and visuals of the wildlife — made me feel as if I was there too. The opening lyrical descriptions of the swampland and inner thoughts of the swamp kids had soul—I loved, felt, and smelled the land, sea, air, and dense plants.
