Before I say one word about this novel, let me be frank in every way: I am not going to make comparisons to Andrew Lloyd Webber's Broadway adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera. But, the story is well presented, despite its being twisted, dark, and gothic in semblance. Armand Moncharmin and Firmin Richard are the managers of the opera house. I wasn't really feeling the romance between he and Christine in any of the versions to be honest. It therefore has a lot of chapters that end in cliffhangers. Sensuality, drugs, and profanity are not present in The Phantom of the Opera.

The Phantom threatens to drown someone as well as blow up the opera house. The masked Phantom then kidnaps Christine and retreats to his abode in the cellars of the opera house. Erik's ruling over the Opera House gives us the dark and suspenseful overtones present throughout the book. Erik complies and releases Raoul. Otherwise, the spiritual content is practically non-existent. He is so touched by this, having never kissed a living person (implying that he has kissed corpses) and he has never had a person kiss him before. This shift allowed him to wed his love of writing with his imaginative impulses, which had been nourished by his journeys to such exotic locales as Russia, Africa, and Asia, and Leroux churned out relatively successful potboilers with an impressive regularity. He represents death and misery while his foil, Raoul, represents light and happiness. However, the developers were unable to license any of the music, which is a shame considering how iconic the songs are. The Ghost's obsession with Christine only grows, and he seeks to possess her as his bride. The two are complete opposites, the exact definition of foil. He isn't the self-centered wimp he was in the book, but not the hero of the 2004 movie. Other main characters are White, but Black police inspector William Henderson fights his own battles against prejudice. The worst in the violence field has to be the illusion-driven "torture chamber" Erik sets up, or the allusion to past violence.
