The verdict: Thanks to the sympathetic direction from Eileen J. Morris, who keeps the mood air-borne, Cleage's comedy is as warm as a Southern evening. Her characters are upper-crust African-Americans in 1964 Montgomery, Alabama. A rain forest bar and brothel in the brutally war-torn Congo is the setting for Lynn Nottage's extraordinary new play. The script is available from Dramatists Play Service. The story strikes a chord with anyone who's ever been guilty of letting life's craziness distract them from what's really important — love and family. In the world of Nacirema, it's as if Philip Barry (Holiday, The Philadelphia Story) has moved in next door. I encourage everyone to grab a copy, listen, learn, and continue to educate others. Gracie wants to study at Barnard and be a writer, but her family says otherwise. Everything about her is perfectly poised and respectable, and Detria Marie Ward is stellar and convincingly portrays her refined character, making the few moments when the veneer slips and Grace becomes a little less structured truly delightful and altogether humorous. THE NACIREMA SOCIETY runs at The Ensemble Theatre until October 21, 2012. It received 2013 Tony nominations for Best Musical, Best Book and Best Score. "We want to end with a comedy. The cast made up of entirely of all women save one male, was fantastic. Nothing will go wrong, as long as she presides.
